| Êste trabalho descreve a estrutura do fruto e o método utilizado na determinação da freqüência de lojas vazias dos frutos do cafeeiro, nas quais não se encontram sementes. Êste método consiste em colher, de cada planta, uma amostra ao acaso de 100 frutos maduros, que são cortados transversalmente, anotando-se em folhas apropriadas o número de sementes dos tipos chato, moca e concha, as que ocorrem em número de três por fruto e o número de lojas vazias, desprovidas de sementes. Esta última anomalia parece resultar da paralização do desenvolvimento do endosperma, o que provavelmente se dá quando esse tecido deveria começar a preencher a cavidade já bem desenvolvida do fruto. | Exbucklandia R. W. Brown ( Bucklandia R. Br. non Pr. ex Sternb., Symingtonia Steen.) In an article on “Alterations in some fossil and living floras” (J. Wash. Ac. Sc. 36: 348. Oct. 1946) R. W. Brown proposed the new generic name Exbucklandia for the Hamamelidaceous genus Bucklandia R. Br., non Pr. ex Sternb., while describing a new fossil species from the United States. He also transferred B. populnea to the new genus. Unfortunately I had overlooked this publication when proposing Symingtonia to replace Bucklandia R. Br. (Acta Bot. Neerl. 1: 443—444. 1952). | The Netherlands Antilles may be divided into: (1) The Curaçao Group (or Netherlands Leeward Islands): Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire. (2) The St. Martin Group (or Netherlands Windward Islands): (Netherlands) St. Maarten, Saba and St. Eustatius. The latter islands are very small, forming together only 8.1 per cent of the total area of the Netherlands Antilles, and 2.2 per cent of its population. | In the course of the year 1954 I received for identification a little Nematoceron belonging to the family Lycoriidae (Sciaridae). After a careful examination of the material and the literature I arrived at the conclusion that my specimens represented a hitherto undescribed species. It belongs to the genus Neosciara Pettey, 1918 (sensu Lengersdorf, 1930 and Frey, 1942). There is some confusion about the naming and delimitation of the genera in the subfamily Lycoriinae. | This paper includes a few notes on some Homoptera insects of the genus Fulgora, according to a study carried out on a little collection belonging to the Laboratory of Zoology of the Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz" (Piracicaba, Brazil). The following species are mentioned: F. servillei Spinola, F. lucifera Germar, F. orthocephala (Pinto da Fonseca) and F. cearensis (Pinto da Fonseca). The types of the latter having been collected in Fortaleza (Ceará), its area of distribution is considerably enlarged by the information of its occurrence in the State of São Paulo. |

Unavoidably, the advance of civilised modern life is linked with destruction of the vegetation. This applies all the more as the endangered area is more densely populated and it certainly applies most alarmingly to the lichen flora of the Netherlands. | Dr. E. Jacobson spent some months on the island of Simalur, and on some of the smaller islands in its immediate neighbourhood in the course of the year 1913. He made extensive zoological collections on these islands, whose fauna was very little known up till that time. Amongst his material was a series of shells belonging to the Pleurodontid genus Amphidromus. | My previous account on the Nannostomidi (1951, The Amsterdam Naturalist, 1 (1): 11—27) dealt with the synonymy of the recognized species. Diagnoses were given of the three genera, Nannostomus, Poecilobrycon and Nannobrycon (new genus). The account was based on but little material, largely on descriptions in literature, yet it could readily be proved that the species described before belong to 5 species only and to 3 well defined genera. I have since had the opportunity to study rather large series from Surinam and some other localities. An entirely new species was found among this material, which is so interesting in many respects that it induced me to reconsider the matter of the phylogeny of the tribe. |

| Pratylenchus steineri n. sp. (Nematoda, Heteroderidae), novo parasito da batatinha (Solanum tuberosum L.), é descrita. A sua importância reside no fato de determinar, nos tubérculos, pequenas e numerosas pústulas, desvalorizando o produto proveniente de terrenos infestados. As lesões são superficiais, uma vez que no interior dos tubérculos os tecidos permanecem sadíos. Dá-se a distribuição da espécie no Estado de São Paulo, são fornecidas algumas anotações bionômicas, bem como outras relativas à sua importância como parasito. São também indicadas medidas de controle (seleção dos tubérculos-semente e rotação de culturas). |

| There is in the literature a noteworthy lack of sampling methods to be employed in the selection of papaya fruits for genetical improvement purposes. In the present experiment methods applied to melon and watermelon were extended to papaya with good results. The authors tried to correlate the solids content-as determined by a hand refractometer-with total sugars in the fruit. The correlation does exist being significant and positive. A regression equation was worked out; it permits to calculate the total sugar content provided the Brix value determined by the hand refractometer is known. The equation is as follows: a = 0.57 s where a = total amount of sugar as glucose, and s = total solids. |

| This paper deals with some Millipedes (Diplopoda), which have been verified associated with or attacking on cultivated plants. The following forms are reported: 1) Orthomorpha (Orthomorpha) coarctata (Saussure, 1860) - Enormous numbers of individuals belonging to this species, whose synanthropic habits are frequentely emphasized, were collected around coffee-plants kept in a nursery. Young plants (with 10 cm) are mentioned as damaged by the species, which gnaws the stem, just above the roots. The dusting with benzene hexachloride (BHC) was successfully employed to prevent the invasions.
